Actually these guys despite being in the throes of a pleasant reunion, had actually nothing to smile at. They were squatters and the Establishment was telling them to piss off! These once neglected precincts had gained on commercial value after the reunion. They had to move.

It may be however added that despite a rather suspicious atmosphere that my presence without official documents in the remote areas of the country inevitably aroused, I did experience an exceptional hospitality from old-time village chiefs, private persons, religious heads, a notorious underground gangster and, after being arrested on charges of being allegedly a western spy (South-African or American!), from the president of the police.
